Job Description & Requirements - Specialty: General Surgery - Discipline: Physician Assistant - Duration: 4 weeks - 36 hours per week - Shift: 8 hours, days - Employment Type: Local Contract Occupation: Physician Assistant Specialty: Surgery Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital Description: A healthcare facility in Potsdam, NY is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant (PA) to support the General Surgery team on a locum basis. The provider will work closely with surgeons and the multidisciplinary care team to deliver comprehensive care to hospitalized patients. Responsibilities will include assisting in surgical procedures, providing medical-surgical floor coverage, managing patient treatment plans, and supporting perioperative patient care. Assignments will include a combination of Surgical First Assist duties in the Operating Room and medical-surgical floor coverage, including rounding, progress notes, consults, and discharge management. The provider will primarily support General Surgery, OB/GYN, and Orthopedic patients. Job Responsibilities: - Assist surgeons during operative procedures as Surgical First Assist. - Perform intraoperative tasks such as cauterizing wounds and vessels, placing clamps and sutures, applying pressure to control bleeding, and assisting with suction, drainage, and irrigation. - Support hemostasis and maintain patient safety during procedures. - Position and immobilize patients appropriately during surgery to maintain circulation and surgical access. - Close surgical wounds using adhesives, sutures, or staples. - Provide medical-surgical floor coverage, including rounding with physicians and documenting progress notes. - Manage patient orders, consults, and discharge planning. - Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia teams, and nursing staff to ensure coordinated patient care. - Provide patient assessments and treatment planning for acutely ill adult patients with diverse medical conditions. Qualifications: - Board Certified Physician Assistant. - Active New York State Physician Assistant License required. - Minimum 2 years of recent surgical experience. - Epic charting experience required. - Certifications: AHA BLS, ACLS, and ATLS required. Working Hours: - Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM - Initial coverage: August 6–8 (3x12-hour shifts) - Additional coverage: August 21–28 (5x8s, 4x10s, or 3x12s possible) - Optional weeknight call (5:00 PM – 7:00 AM, up to 4 shifts/month) - Optional weekend call (Friday 5:00 PM – Monday 7:00 AM) - Weekend rounding: Saturday–Sunday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM Skills: - Strong surgical assisting skills and perioperative knowledge. - Ability to manage multiple patient cases in a fast-paced acute care environment. - Proficiency with Epic EMR system. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Strong teamwork and collaboration abilities.
