Lead Engineer- Distribution Planning

Avangrid is seeking a Lead Engineer-
Distribution Planning to join their team in their
Binghamton, NY location.
Work Location: NY , CT, (Multiple locations)
The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve complex
problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative
solutions. Able to work independently with guidance on only the
most complex tasks.
Participates and represents Avangrid on Industry associations.
Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the
power industry, through training and industry associations and
committees. Applies established distribution criteria and uses
sound utility engineering practices to identify deficiencies in the
distribution system. Utilizes complex computer aided analysis tools
to develop cost efficient wire and non-wire alternative solutions
to known distribution system deficiencies. Studies new distributed
generation interconnection applications and performs system impact
studies. Assists Distribution Engineers and Field Planners in
evaluating system reliability and new service requirements. Acts as
a technical leader in the Electric Distribution Planning group to
direct, oversee and mentor other Planning Engineers in the
Department. Development of scoping documents for distribution
system improvement projects and proposed solutions for identified
distribution issues falling outside of established distribution
planning criteria, including recommendations for new distribution
substations and upgrade/replacement of existing distribution
substation transformers and equipment. Proficient at utilizing
computer aided analysis tools to identify system deficiencies and
plan for system reinforcements. Perform engineering analysis for
locating and determining the settings for distribution automation
equipment. Review complex applications of distributed generation
and perform system impact studies. Can serve as Department leader
in the absence of the Manager of Electric Distribution Planning.
Assists during storm restoration.
- Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and
calculations using standard methodology, principles, and other
viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to
resolve problems and/or to improve processes/services including
development of costeffective non-wires alternatives to electric
distribution capital budgeted projects. Solves complex distribution
system problems. Utilizes a broad perspective to identify
innovative solutions. e.g., voltage issues, area planning
- Proactively studies and reports on the status of all
distribution system facilities in assigned geographical area of
responsibility on an established repeating cycle. Assigned area may
include multiple OPCOs. Studies to include but not limited to,
thermal loading, distribution automation, N-1 analysis, large scale
customer load additions.
- Develop and prepare documentation (e.g. need statement, project
scope, schematics, one-line diagrams) using depth and breadth of
expertise in own discipline regarding assignments of complex level
of difficulty. Responsible for maintaining and prioritizing a
10-year plan of capital projects for assigned area.
- Serve as SME on assigned demonstration projects, initiatives,
and teams across Avangrid. Interpret internal/external business
issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements on
distribution planning issues. Participate in Industry associations.
Lead teams, mentor & review engineering work of others.
Anticipate/make recommendations with respect to customer &
stakeholder needs. Explain difficult concepts & influence others.
May be required to make presentations to regulatory/public
entities. Assist in guiding & mentoring engineers in planning
design and engineering development. Manages & provides direction
for resources outside of the department. Leads others to specify &
design systems to resolve complex problems in nonstandard
situations & develop creative solutions including the development
of cost-effective non-wires alternatives to electric
distribution capital budgeted projects. Independently apply design
standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & Avangrid
Skills and Requirements
Education & Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET (or
equivalent) accredited college/university required.
- An advanced graduate level engineering degree or specialized
advanced training (e.g. PTI, ECNE PUI) is preferred
- 5 - 7 years experience performing engineering duties.
- Possess a depth and breadth of experience in Engineering and
knowledge of internal/external business and regulatory issues.
- Maintains knowledge of leading-edge techniques or technology
through participation in professional associations.
- Able to explain difficult concepts and influence others to lead
- Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or
- Able to work in a cross-functional teams across Avangrid OpCos
as a subject matter expert (SME) and guide or mentor other team
