Job Title: Operating Room Technician Profession: Technician Specialty: Operating Room Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 10 (0630-1700) Experience: Minimum Years of Experience: N/A Preferred Skills: Previous Operating Room experience; Previous Surgical Technologist experience. License: Required Certifications: - Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting - BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross) Must-Have: High School diploma or equivalent Description: Under general direction, observes and practices sterile technique. Maintains asepsis and anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes OR supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the OR staff. Follows Infection Control policies and procedures and demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique. Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively. Assists the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments and other related items during procedures. Anticipates the surgeon's needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment. Maintains an organized operative field by keeping instruments clean and in their proper place. Keeps an accurate sponge, tape, needle, dissector, and instrument count. Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment according to preference cards and identifies conflicts or problems. Cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case. Provides a safe surgical environment for patients by identifying potential hazards. Displays knowledge of potential hazards within the Operating Room. Utilizes experienced OR staff as a resource and acts as a resource for new OR personnel. Assists in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon. Handles and identifies specimens per policy. Expedites the effective and efficient turnover of the OR between cases. Takes rotating call duty. Will perform additional responsibilities as requested. On-call responsibilities typically include 8 to 10 on-call shifts per month, with 1 to 2 weekend shifts. A 20-minute response time is required in the event of an emergency.
